Now that I have a pretty good knowledge of English (which only took me six years of living in the US). I'm setting my sights on another language to learn. I have a couple to chose from: -Russian - major Slavic language which would also allow me to learn Cirilica (easy to learn since im Slavic I plan on visiting Russia one day. -Spanish - which I studied for a year in the U.S. I have some Spanish-speaking friends who I could use to help me out with it. Language with the second largest number of speakers after Mandarin. -German - which I was studying back in Poland for 6 years with mixed results and don't remember much now. -Mandarin/Japaneese - maybe I should learn a non-European language for a change? I think in the long run I may try to learn as many of them as I can. But which would you guys start with

It depends on what you need it for and what are your future plans.
I somewhat understand the mixed results of German. It's the typical result of school education.
I hear the far east languages are too complicated.

How about near eastern languages like Arabic?
If you want to learn a real old school Slavic language, my suggestion would be Old Slavic. A marvelous language...

Romanian languages are easily learned by Slaves, Spanish perhaps being the most beautiful and clear of all of them ( I speak a little bit castillan ). Russian sounds great. So, one Slavic and one Romanian. No chance of mixing or something. And You are Slav, so it should be an advantage. It all depends on how good a learner You are. And how often do You practice.

I think Spanish is the ugliest Latin language. And by the way, Latin languages don't have declentions, so they aren't similar to Slavic languages at all.

Spanish - A fe! Deutsch ist die Fremdsprache, die ich am besten gekannt habe ... But I don't think, that in US it will help you in something... maybe in Wesern Poland - Breslau, Posen and Danzig, where you can find many Germans... Russian - I started to learn this language a month ago ... I don't know how it looks with russian imigrants in Chicago, but if there are so many them like us, then it's the best way ... And if you want to go there and feel really slavic then there is no choice ... Far East - We don't need Asian languages, they need our! And let it be, don't try to change it ..

I didn`t say they are similar to Slavic languages, but they are easier to learn from German languages (imagine You learn Dutch, I`m not sure how they understand each other). Spanish is language with no "problematic" vowels, and a certain strength in expression. So, easier to apprehend than French, Romanian, or even Italian.

I also think that learning Spanish would be a breeze. Pronounciacion is very easy for Slavs, because, other than a couple of letters and unlike English, it is pronounced the way it's written. When I was studying it in H.S. Slavic speakers and I had a great pronounciation, whereas Americans were struggling . Plus it's a most widely spoken language in the World. German is really sharp sounding, and I generally don't like Germans for their "Deutchland uber alles" mentality, and a general disregard for Poles. Far-eastern languages may seem like a waste of time today, but who knows where we will be in the future with a grow of China's power and population.
