Russian Western Military District Receives New Batch of Mi-17V5 Helicopters.
MILITARY & INTELLIGENCE 16:54 16.01.2015(updated 17:14 16.01.2015)
MOSCOW, January 16 (Sputnik) — Russia's Western Military District has received a fresh batch of Mi-17V-5 transport helicopters and is set to receive more, the head of the district's press service Colonel Oleg Kochetkov told Russia's RIA Novosti on Friday.
"About ten of the new Mi-8MTV-5 [the domestic designation for the Mi-17V-5] military transport helicopters have entered into the army aviation brigade in the Western Military District, stationed in the Pskov region," Kochetkov told RIA Novosti. "It is expected that by the end of the month, the brigade will receive another [shipment]," he added.
The district's pilots and aircrew have been undergoing training in order to familiarize them with the new equipment, and regular flights will begin soon. Given that the helicopter is designed to operate in a wide variety of environmental and geographic conditions, pilots have been undergoing flight simulator training, including takeoff and landing on makeshift airfields, aircraft carriers and in mountainous terrain. The training is also said to have included preparation for emergency situations, and the use of weaponry.
The Mi-17V-5 is the latest modification to the successful, time-tested Mi-8 design, which was recently rated third among Flightglobal's 2015 'Top 10' most popular military aviation designs for 2015. The modification, presently in use by Afghan Security Forces, has been designed with multiple roles in mind, including troop and cargo transport, heavy duty cargo transport via an external sling, as well as search and rescue and fire support missions.
Last October, General Campbell of the US forces in Afghanistan praised the Mi-17V5, saying that it has "been a force multiplier for the special operating forces and for the conventional forces, the army and the police." He noted that he had "been really, really impressed" with the helicopter's performance, noting that its ability to provide cargo and troop transport support in difficult terrain and climatic conditions was "pretty incredible."
India's Hindustan Aeronautics plans to produce a licensed version of the Kazan Helicopter plant's Mi-17; 78 nations currently operate the craft. Over 17,000 different variations of the helicopter have been produced to date since the beginning of production in the early 1960s.

Re-commissioned? Soviet nuke-capable sub-killing copter comeback slated.
RT.com May 13, 2015 10:12
The Russian Navy has reportedly expressed interest in resurrecting the once-feared nuclear-capable Mi-14 anti-submarine helicopter. In the 1990s, Washington insisted on their decommissioning, along with strategic bombers and ballistic missiles.
Following the news two weeks ago that Russia is preparing to renew production of the Tu-160 ‘Blackjack’ supersonic strategic bomber and missile carrier, it’s reported that the Mil Mi-14 Soviet anti-submarine helicopter could soon be back on production line.
Business Online media outlet from Russia's Republic of Tatarstan, where the Mi-14 was produced, says that its capital's Kazan Helicopter Works (KVZ) is preparing to return the Mi-14 to the Russian Navy. KVZ has not commented on the news, but a source within the works says the re-commissioning issue has been raised.
The Mil Mi-14 is a shore-based amphibious helicopter armed with (optionally) a torpedo, twelve 64kg or eight 120kg depth bombs. This submarine killer also had very special ammo in its arsenal: a 1 kiloton nuclear antisubmarine bomb weighting 1,600kg, capable of scuttling any underwater target within a radius of 800 meters.
The chopper not only had a unique capability of landing on water, but was an all-weather long-range helicopter capable of operating as far as 300km offshore.
The helicopter could stay airborne for 5.5 hours and cover a total distance of 1,100km.
Its sonars, magnetometers, hydroacoustic beacons and other special submarine-tracking equipment were highly-advanced and effectively detected all types of submarines. Once spotted, a sub was doomed and could not escape.
The Americans took Mi-14 on a special notice after an incident in late 1980s, when an unidentified foreign submarine, presumably of the US Navy, was detected in the Soviet territorial waters. The intruder was allowed to leave unharmed only because the actual command to eliminate the border violator never came, Business Online reported.
The Mi-14 was so good at submarine hunting that in 1996, under tremendous pressure from Washington, all Russian antisubmarine version Mi-14 helicopters were decommissioned.
With the Russian Navy undergoing massive re-equipment, Mi-14 would allegedly be highly sought after by the Black Sea and the Northern Fleets.
The helicopter can also be used at offshore oilfields and for rescue operations at sea.
The initial demand for the aircraft is reportedly estimated at 100 helicopters.
Experts believe, the re-commissioning of the amphibian helicopter could be done within two years in several stages. First stage implies restoration of 10 decommissioned Mi-14s, then they will undergo deep modernization, and the third stage will be essentially the return to production line, which might reportedly take up to five years.
The new version of Mi-14 is likely to get new engines, advanced avionics and modern electronics. It is expected that modern version of Mi-14 will have better floating stability than its forebears.

Russia launches production of upgraded Mi-26, world’s largest helicopter.
RT.com May 22, 2015 18:35
The world’s most powerful heavy transport helicopter, the Mi-26T2, is now officially on the production line, Russian Helicopters Corp announced.
“We announce the start-up of production of the modernized heavy helicopter Mi-26T2 serial production. Helicopters of Mi-26 family have unequalled characteristics, and their modernization considerably expands the potential of this aircraft,” said Russian Helicopters CEO Andrey Shibitov.
Creating heavy duty helicopters is a particularly challenging task for aircraft designers, but Russia has “colossal and unique experience” in this field, Shibitov said.
There is no doubt the Mi-26T2 is going to be in demand in Russia and abroad, he added.
The Soviet-Russian heavy transport helicopter Mi-26 (NATO designation: Halo) remains world's largest and most powerful helicopter to ever go into serial production. The aircraft has both civilian and military modifications. Starting from 1980, there were 316 machines produced.
Mi-26T2 has a maximum takeoff mass of 56 tons and 800 kilometer one-filling fuel capacity; its top speed is 295 km/h, while its fuel-efficient version has a top speed of 255 km/h.
The Mi-26T2’s payload capability is 20 tons, whereas its nearest rival, the American Sikorsky CH-53E, has an external load capability of 16 tons. It has been rumored that further Mi-26T2 modernization might increase helicopter’s payload capability to 25 tons.
The helicopter passed all basic tests in 2010-11. The Mi-26T2 was first presented to the public at the MAKS-2011 air show.
Mi-26T2 helicopters are assembled at the Rosvertol factory in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don.
The Mi-26T2 has improved avionics and modern navigation controls with five displays. This has allowed the designers to reduce the crew from five to three pilots, though just two are enough to operate the machine itself.
Unlike its predecessor, the Mi-26T2 is 24-hours-a-day operable and has special night flight equipment.
In early 2015, two Mi-26T2 helicopters were assembled for export and after tests will be delivered to Algeria.

Russian military to get ‘Terminator’ Arctic helicopter for trials. RT.com 10 Nov, 2015 16:06 The Russian military are reportedly set to start trials of the Arctic version of the Mi-8 transport helicopter later this month. According to sources, the copter uses space technologies that can withstand even the harshest conditions of the Artic. “The Mil Mi-8AMTSh-VA will be handed over to the military on November 25,” a source in the Russian delegation at the Dubai Airshow told Itar-Tass. The development of the Arctic variant to join the extensive family of transport helicopters was first reported in 2013. It's a modified version of the combat transporter Mi-8AMTSh, unofficially nicknamed the “Terminator”, which has been in service since 2009. The vehicle was adapted for the extreme cold, strong winds and limited visibility of its designated climate zone, including prolonged periods of darkness during polar nights. It will reportedly have an improved powerplant compared to the non-Arctic original and its cockpit will be protected from low temperatures with technologies taken from Russia's space exploration program. The Russian Defense Ministry said it may contract up to 100 transporters of this model, supporting the country's growing military presence in the Arctic. Moscow considers the resource-rich north a region of potential conflict and is upgrading its armed forces to be able to protect Russia's interests there. Putin’s helicopter? Secretive flying fortress spotted over Kremlin.
RT.com 22 Dec, 2015 15:04
Russia’s most classified helicopter has been caught on camera over the Kremlin. A pair of Mi-35MS helicopters were spotted taking off from behind the red-brick ancient fortress in downtown Moscow.
Russian YouTube user Coocxals reports he spotted two unusually-looking choppers while taking a walk near the Cathedral of Christ the Savior and rushed towards the Kremlin along the bank of the Moskva River, hoping to make a video of the helicopters taking off – and was rewarded for his effort.
A couple of special-status olive-painted helicopters, bearing multiple antennas and no tail numbers, soared into the air and shortly disappeared behind the downtown roofs in the Russian capital.
“I love helicopters!” Coocxals wrote on YouTube, adding that the video was not edited. Although the special-looking aircraft were filmed on May 7, when preparations for the historic 70th anniversary Victory Day parade on Red Square were in full swing, it gained media attention only half a year later.
The Mil Mi-35MS is a development from the legendary Mi-24 assault helicopter dubbed ‘Crocodile.’ Yet according to reports cited by Rossiyskaya Gazeta, it boasts improved avionics, modern engines VK-2500, composite blades and all-digital equipment.
The aircraft is also reportedly packed full of sensors and radars, such as night flight systems, GLONASS navigation system, Rainbow-N-B satellite station, jam-proof communications equipment, fully computerized pilot cabin and brand-new large panoramic rectangular-shaped illuminators.
Just like its battle-ready elder brother, the Mi-35MS bears a couple of short wings, but instead of guided missile launchers, the helicopter bears containers with electronic warfare equipment protecting the aircraft from air-defense missile attacks.
The aircraft has non-retractable landing gear which helps to compensate the impact shock in case of a hard touchdown.
The Mi-35MS is positioned as special military command and control/communication helicopter for VIP flights, Coocxals pointed out.
An operable Mi-35MS was first spotted in 2013 at a military base in the southern city of Rostov-on-Don.
