4th largest army in Europe we turned against one another, funny and sad. It wasn't the 4th in Europe, that's a myth. But it was the most powerful compared to our neighbours with the exception of Italy maybe.....but we are better soldiers than the frog-eaters A positive was that we produced most of the equipment at home (about 80-90%) with the exception of fighter jets and some of the missile systems and it was planned to become almost 100% self sufficient. During the 1980's project "Novi Avion" was started which was intended to be an advanced indigenous fighter aircraft.....first flight was scheduled in 1992 (see slides below) www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1QjOxEFqOA......... I've got some pics and I'll post them when I get I chance to sort them out.

Isn't it 4th largest ground force? Just of the top of my head I can think of the following countries that had bigger armies: USSR West Germany East Germany Poland France Britain Italy

Once considered the fourth largest army in Europe, JNA consisted of the ground forces, air force and navy.
per wikipedia.

Its not a myth that it could engage million soldiers like nothing, its not a myth that we had such a construction of military and territorial defense and IN THOSE TIMES modern vehicles, airjets, navy and so on. Yugoslavia had 3BILLION of weapon EXPORTS! 3 BILLION who knows if it wasn't even more? Yugoslavia was a good businessman when TITO was alive and not to mention how good relationships we had with middleastern countries and a reputation in the world. We had so big military arsenal and menpower, not to mention our own weapon designs, air designs, APC designs, everything was almost home made AND GOOD quality, now we have nothing, with armies of the south slavs now, we can MAYBE conquer albania MAYBE!

So we were going to build a Gripen? ;D It was based on the French 'Rafale'.....sort of a lighter single engined version of it with mostly local avionics. Rafalewww.airforce-technology.com/projects/rafale/---------------- Love the video but this what you said isn't true, Yugoslavia had the 4th biggest army in europe and its not a myth. You're getting carried away..... It was strong on paper but in reality it was over-bureaucratised and since it hadn't fought a war since WWII, it had become very unprepared for the realities of modern warfare. The training of most units was very formalised and unrealistic which resulted in unnecessary (heavy) casualties at the start of the war in 1991. And BTW, the exports of weaponry was more like 2 Billion at it's peak (mid to late 80's)

JNA was getting killed by general`s ethnic quotas. 1 Albanian general for 1 Albanian colonel, 1 Serb general for 20 Serb colonels.

The training of most units was very formalised and unrealistic which resulted in unnecessary (heavy) casualties at the start of the war in 1991. Many from the other side had the same training. And I would say the JNA was an army that made real men, not pussies like those armies today where before you have to shoot they must ask you if it's a problem for your conscience. lol
