Russia, France to Jointly Build Armored Vehicle.
16:32 29/06/2012 ZHUKOVSKY, June 29 (RIA Novosti)
Russia and France will jointly build a new armored infantry vehicle in the next 18 months, the Rosoboronexport arms export monopoly said on Friday.
Speaking at the Engineering Technologies forum at Zhukovsky near Moscow, Igor Sevastyanov, the company’s deputy chief, said he was heading a working party incorporating new technology from both nations and that a model had been made.
"We have a project under the aegis of a Russian-French group for land forces, which I head," Sevastyanov said. "Now we are working on development of some vehicles with a French base but with Russian weapons and Russian turrets.”
“The vehicle should appear in the near future, around 18 months. We have a draft design and a model has been made," he added.
He said France is also interested in co-production, with Russia, of an armored personnel carrier to be sold to third countries.
It may also be used by the French or Russian armed forces, he said, adding that the new vehicle would have to meet both Russian and NATO standards.
Previous media reports have suggested that talks have taken place between Russia and French military vehicle manufacturer, Panhard, on purchasing Panhard vehicles for Russia’s border guard service. The results of the talks have not been disclosed.
Sevastyanov also said Russia and the United States could cooperate in joint development of arms and military equipment. He did not mention any specific projects, only saying a “joint product” might be around in five to 10 years.
In addition, he said, all arms contracts previously signed with Egypt will be carried out.
“Egypt’s Defense Ministry confirmed that all contracts concluded with Russia will be implemented, possibly with some adjustments,” he said. “Egypt is an excellent paying client.”
On Libya, Sevastyanov said the country’s authorities were interested in continuing military-technical cooperation with Russia and unfreeze the contracts that were put on hold after the revolution.
Last August, Rosoboronexport chief Anatoly Isaikin put Russia’s “foregone profits” from the frozen contracts at $4 billion.

Russian Airborne Gets New ECM System. 13:06 06/07/2012 MOSCOW, July 6 (RIA Novosti) Russia’s Airborne Forces (VDV) have accepted into service the new multirole Infauna electronic warfare vehicle capable of jamming radio-controlled mines and improvised explosive devices, the Defense Ministry said on Friday. “The multirole Infauna system has undergone tests since the start of 2012 at a VDV base. It has been accepted into the service’s electronic countermeasures units,” said the VDV’s spokeswoman Major Irina Kruglova. Infauna is designed to interfere with radio-controlled explosive devices and electronic fusing systems as well as jamming the enemy’s tactical communications systems. The service has taken delivery of the first four systems, Kruglova said. The VDV also recently took delivery of the Judoist electronic warfare system based on the MKTK-1A vehicle, which is optimized for the electronic intelligence (ELINT) role, and locating enemy air defense radars.

Russian Army to Switch to Wheeled Armored Vehicles. 18:49 16/07/2012 MOSCOW, July 16 (RIA Novosti) The Russian Defense Ministry has decided to equip the Ground Forces mostly with wheeled rather than tracked armored vehicles, GF commander Col. Gen. Vladimir Chirkin said on Monday. “The Defense Ministry has decided to replace the majority of tracked armored vehicles with wheeled vehicles,” Chirkin said. “We will soon start R&D work on the development of wheeled vehicles.” The general said the replacement will involve self-propelled guns, air defense systems and light tanks. One of the main reasons for the replacement is the longer service life of the wheeled vehicles, he said. “The service life of the tracked vehicles until a major overhaul is up to 30,000 kilometers while that of the wheeled vehicles is up to 1 million kilometers,” Chirkin said. Wheeled vehicles will also allow the military to minimize railroad transport during redeployment. Russia signed a deal with Italy’s Iveco company last December on the semi-knocked down assembly of Lynx light multirole armored vehicles for the Russian Ground Forces in the central Russia city of Voronezh. In addition, Russia is currently working with France on the development of armored vehicles with a French wheeled base but equipped with Russian weapons and Russian turrets.

Russian Military May Receive New Tank for Testing in 2013. 19:30 08/08/2012 MOSCOW, August 8 (RIA Novosti) The Russian military may receive a prototype of a new main battle tank (MBT) for field testing almost a year earlier than scheduled, First Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Sukhorukov said on Wednesday. The tank, dubbed Armata, is being developed by tank manufacturer Uralvagonzavod in Russia’s Urals region. The Defense Ministry earlier said the field testing of the MBT was expected to start in 2014. “Uralvagonzavod tells us they will supply a first prototype under the Armata project for testing 10 months ahead of schedule,” Sukhorukov said. The first deliveries of the tank to the Russian Armed Forces are scheduled for 2015. A total of 2,300 MBTs are expected to be supplied by 2020. The design of the Armata incorporates work from other projects, including Object 195 and Black Eagle. The tank will reportedly feature a remotely controlled gun, fully automated loading and separate crew compartment made from composite materials and protected by multi-layered armor.

Russia to Build New Artillery, Air-Defense Systems.
PRUDBOI TESTING RANGE (Volgograd Region) November 22 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will develop artillery, missile defense and nuclear, biological and chemical defense systems using a uniform tank platform, Ground Forces chief Col. Gen. Vladimir Chirkin said on Thursday.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin earlier said new fighting vehicles, including a new generation tank, will be based on the Armata “universal combat platform,” a next-generation heavy military tracked vehicle platform.
The Armata platform is intended to be the basis for a main battle tank, a heavy infantry fighting vehicle, a combat engineering vehicle, an armored recovery vehicle, a heavy armored personnel carrier, a tank support combat vehicle and several types of self-propelled fighting vehicles.
“Next year, Armata prototypes will be shown at an exhibition in Nizhny Tagil,” the general said.
Oleg Siyenko, general director of the UralVagonZavod tank maker, said in August the Russian Armed Forces will receive a total of up to 2,300 such machines by 2020.

Russia Developing 200-km Range Rocket System.
MOSCOW, November 19 (RIA Novosti) - Russia is developing new long-range multiple-launch rocket systems (MLRS) with improved guidance that could allow them to strike targets up to 120 miles (200 km) away, the Defense Ministry's artillery spokesman said on Monday.
"We have the military-technical potential to create a new generation of MLRS with a range of 200 km," Lt. Col. Nikolai Donyushkin said.
Russia's artillery currently deploys the 122-mm Grad, 220-mm Uragan, and 300-mm Smerch rocket systems and the improved Tornado-S, Tornado-G, and Uragan 1-M are currently undergoing state acceptance trials. The army is in the process of receiving up to 30 Tornado-G systems this year, replacing the BM-21 Grad.
The improved Tornado-S is being upgraded with the special GLONASS satellite navigation system used in the Smerch missile system, Donyushkin said. The Tornado-S will have guided rocket rounds enabling it to fire out to 72 miles (120 km).
"The Tornado-S will have a longer range and increased effectiveness thanks to greater accuracy and the use of new warhead payloads and a reduced launch readiness time of just three minutes," he said.
The army is gradually moving toward a new level of capability for deploying precision use of long-range rocket artillery, he said.
"Massed use of high-precision weapons makes it possible to be certain of destroying high-value targets before they can be used on the battlefield by main-force groups. Fewer rounds need to be fired, simplifying logistics," he added.

Serbia to Build Armored Vehicles with Russian Components.
BELGRADE, November 28 (RIA Novosti) - Serbia and Russia will collaborate in the manufacture of several modifications of armored fighting vehicles at a new plant in Serbia, Serbian Defense Minister Aleksandar Vucic said on Wednesday.
The plant, in the city of Velika Plana, is to be opened before the end of the current year.
“We are expecting to sign an agreement with Russia on deliveries of chassis and bodies for those vehicles while we will provide components for different modifications of infantry fighting vehicles,” Vucic said after a meeting with Russian Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Rogozin in Belgrade.
Initially, the plant will have 130 employees and then their number will increase to 190, Vucic said.
Kenya and Bangladesh will be the first to receive the armored vehicles.
The plant will also build the Nora self-propelled howitzer, the minister said.

Russia to Commission BMD-4M Airborne Vehicles in 2013.
MOSCOW, December 27 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian Airborne Troops will receive the first BMD-4M airborne combat vehicles and BTR-MD Rakushka multirole transport vehicles by the end of 2013, Defense Ministry spokesman Col. Alexander Kucherenko said on Thursday.
“Paratroopers are planning to receive 10 modernized BMD-4M airborne infantry fighting vehicles and 10 tracked Rakushka armored personnel carriers by mid-2013 for final testing and commissioning by the end of 2013,” Kucherenko said.
A decision to adopt the long-awaited BMD-4Ms has been made in the beginning of December despite an earlier statement by former deputy defense minister Alexander Sukhorukov that the vehicle had not met the requirements and would not be bought by the military.
The BMD-4M is the latest modification of an armored combat vehicle that can be para-dropped to provide firepower and support for airborne troops. It features a new chassis, a digital fire control system and a set of high-precision weaponry, including a 100-mm gun.
The 13-ton vehicle has a crew of two and can carry six paratroopers.
The Russian military is expected to acquire at least 1,000 BMD-4Ms under the current rearmament program until 2020.
At present, 123 BMD-3 and 60 BMD-4 airborne combat vehicles are in service with the Russian Airborne Troops, with the rest being outdated BMD-2 models.

Russian Paratroopers to Receive Indigenous Armored Vehicles. MOSCOW, February 26 (RIA Novosti) – The Russian Airborne Troops (RAT) will be mainly equipped with domestically-designed armored vehicles, including Tigr-M, RAT Commander Col. Gen. Vladimir Shamanov said. “Our brigade-level air assault units will have an armored car component based on Tigr vehicles,” Shamanov said at a news conference in RIA Novosti on Monday. “The deliveries of Tigr-M will start soon, and the first recipients of these vehicles will be special forces units.” The SPM-2 GAZ-233036 Tigr (Tiger) is a high-mobility multipurpose military vehicle manufactured by MIC, a GAZ Group division, at the Arzamas machine-manufacturing plant. It has a maximum speed of 150 kilometers per hour and can carry up to nine personnel or 1.2 tons of cargo. In addition, the Airborne Troops may order experimental Typhoon 6x6 armored personnel carriers, manufactured by Russia’s KamAZ, after the company modifies the vehicle’s design to match the demands of the Russian paratroopers, Shamanov said. The announcement comes shortly after the Russian Defense Ministry said it would not purchase any more Italian Rys (Lynx) light multirole vehicles (LMV). The Iveco LMV M65 Lynx, was picked under former defense minister Anatoly Sedyukov over the locally produced GAZ-2330 Tigr armored vehicle in a rare departure from the military's principle of "buying domestic." The first 57 vehicles were assembled last year with 10 percent local content at a plant in Voronezh. The remaining 301 vehicles under existing contract will be assembled in 2013 at a new KAMAZ plant in Tatarstan. Newly-appointed Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has insisted that domestic manufacturers must have priority in procuring weaponry for the Russian military. As part of the 2011-2020 state arms procurement program, the Defense Ministry plans to buy 1,775 LMVs by 2015 for $1 billion. Typhoon
