“Congratulations to North Macedonia on becoming the 30th member of the North Atlantic Alliance,” Poland’s Permanent Delegation to NATO said in a tweet.
It added: “As a strong supporter of NATO’s open-door policy, Poland looks forward to expanded allied cooperation, which ensures peace and security in our Euro-Atlantic area.”
Poland’s foreign ministry congratulated “the country’s government and citizens on a successful conclusion of the accession process.”
It said in a statement posted on its website that Poland was convinced North Macedonia would “significantly contribute to our collective security and to extending the area of stability in Europe.”
The Polish foreign ministry added that “admitting the Republic of North Macedonia to NATO proves the vitality of the Treaty’s Open Door policy and sends a positive signal to all countries that wish to join the Alliance.”
It voiced hope for “successful cooperation” with North Macedonia as part of NATO and a “further enhancing of bilateral relations.”
North Macedonia on Friday became NATO’s newest member “upon depositing its instrument of accession to the North Atlantic Treaty with the US State Department in Washington,” the Western defence alliance announced on its website.
It added that a flag-raising ceremony for the country would take place at NATO’s headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, on Monday.
NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg was quoted as saying in Brussels on Friday: “North Macedonia is now part of the NATO family, a family of 30 nations and almost 1 billion people—a family based on the certainty that, no matter what challenges we face, we are all stronger and safer together.“
Poland’s President Andrzej Duda last month voiced support for North Macedonia’s efforts to join NATO and the European Union after talks in Warsaw with the Balkan country’s leader Stevo Pendarovski.
On Thursday, EU leaders gave North Macedonia as well as Albania formal approval to begin talks to join the 27-nation bloc.
Poland last summer hosted prime ministers and senior figures from 14 European countries at a major conference to discuss the challenges and European integration prospects of the Western Balkans region.

Russian combat strength is at post-USSR peak after decade of investment, says military industry bankrolled British think tank.
RT.com 1 Oct, 2020 19:24
A Western weapons-industry funded think tank claims Russia’s military capability is at its strongest since the Cold War period, and its forces are better equipped and more professional after ten years of investment and reform.
The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), says Russia’s modernization and recent combat experience means it now has a highly capable army. It is worth noting that the organisation is funded by the likes of Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Raytheon and Boeing: All of whom have a vested business interest in promoting the idea of threats to Western military hegemony.
“Today, Russia fields capable conventional armed forces, which Moscow has been willing to use operationally, as well as one of the world’s two largest strategic arsenals,” said the IISS, noting that the country’s military capability has been recently tested in multiple theaters of war, including in Syria.
The experts explained that Russia’s ground forces are “smaller and more capable” than they were in the 1990s, and are kept in “a high state of readiness.” In particular, they highlighted the country’s airborne forces and reorganized special forces as being particularly important. They also noted Russia’s progress in strengthening its artillery and missile capabilities. Which is sure to please their sponsors.
According to the report, Russia’s military modernization attempts began in 2008, after the conflict in Georgia showed it “lacked the capacity to rapidly deploy enough combat-ready units.”
On Wednesday, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu heaped praise on the country’s armed forces, declaring Russia responsible for the defeat of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in Syria. Thanks to the Russian operation, more than 133,000 militants have been killed, he claimed.
The IISS is a British think tank based in London. Founded in 1958, it has been accused of being deceptive about the source of some of its funds, and was said to have received £25 million ($32 million) from the Bahraini royal family.
