Oil has been found there, but that has nothing to do with it? Consider how desperate Japan is for oil... -------------------------------------------------- Russia makes overture on Kurils. BBC Russia has said it may be ready to resolve a dispute with Japan over four islands seized by Soviet troops at the end of World War II. Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said his government recognises an undertaking made in 1956 to return two of the islands to Japan. He called for talks to discuss the issue, which has long soured relations between Tokyo and Moscow. However, Japan is likely to insist all four islands are returned to it. 'Dialogue needed' Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi recently restated his country's claim to the territory, known in Japan as the Northern Territories and in Russia as the southern Kurils. The BBC's correspondents say Tokyo has so far shown no interest in the offer from Moscow. It is based on a promise by former Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, made in 1956, to return two of the islands - a pledge that was never fulfilled In a Russian television interview, Mr Lavrov said the present Russian government should live up to the commitment. He said: "We acknowledge this declaration, but its realisation requires a dialogue. "No-one has ever discussed how to perform this in practice." The territorial dispute has prevented comprehensive peace between the two nations. Russia's President Vladimir Putin is expected to travel to Japan next year to mark the signing of the first treaty between Moscow and Tokyo in 1854. The three islands and a cluster of outcrops are currently inhabited by a small community of Russian fishermen and their families.

NO, RF should never return the islands to the japanese, then they will ask for more then the chinese will start to ask for things and central asians. Never should RF return the islands.....if they return the island then before that they should populate the islands with russians and then make the russians declare the independence of the island and fight the japanese ;D

My problem is that Putin is trying to honor a 1956 Soviet treaty. I dislike the fact that Lavrov commented to one news agency that Russia is the inheritor of the USSR. In that case we have a totally different political picture that unfolds before the world. I don't want my country to be associated with the anti-Russian Soviet regime, that's not only incorrect but immoral and degrading.

No, the Japanese don't need the Kuril Islands back. Russia is under no promise to return them. "Lavrov commented to one news agency that Russia is the inheritor of the USSR".....nope that statement is not true. USSR was a whole different entity both politically and legally. Let the Japanese whine all they want....what are they gonna do? send godzilla after Putin ;D Ok, getting off topic...what are these "Soviet Symbols" you speaking of Danik?

Soviet symbols are a blight on Russia's honor, that means the red star, the hammer and cycle, the red flag, the images and names of famous Bolsheviks and revolutionaries. These symbols were created by and are associated with a regime that was anti-Russian, and anti-Christian, they were invented by those who despised Russian patriotism and Orthodoxy. The attempt of taking these symbols and melding them with Russian patriotic sentiment is ideologically futile and blasphemous. It doesn't so much matter what the Yanks think (that ranks rather low on the priority list), it's about honor before the history and legacy of the nation and its people.

Vityaz I think Vladimir answered your quastions. And Vladimir I totaly agree with you, why dont we have old banners like Cross or Jesus painted on Army flags?? (And nobody should tell me that there is other religions serving in Russian army, no there is Orthodox Battalions and there is Russian regulary Battalions and in those battalions it is still orthodoxy).
