Polish political party calls for removal of cross from public buildings.
A new Polish political party has ruffled conservative feathers in the Catholic country with a campaign to have the cross ousted from public buildings.
Telegraph.co.uk By Matthew Day, Warsaw 12:44AM GMT 07 Mar 2011
Supporters of the party want the crosses removed, or hung alongside the Star of David, in an attempt to diminish the power of the Church.
In a clear challenge to the strong and omnipresent influence of the Catholic Church in Poland, members of the Support Janusz Palikot party caused outrage in the city of Szczecin by trying to hang Jewish and Muslim symbols in the town's council chamber alongside the Christian cross, before removing the cross.
Janusz Palikot, the party's leader and founder, has also called for the Star of David, and symbols of other faiths and churches to be hung in the national parliament.
The Christian cross is ubiquitous in government buildings in Poland and hangs from thousands of walls in schools and hospitals across the country.
A maverick politician - who said last week that "Poles have been slaves to the Catholic Church for a 1,000 years" - Mr Palikot argued that under the Polish constitution Poland is officially a secular state and therefore there should be no religious symbols.
As an alternative, he said that as the constitution guarantees the equality of all faiths, no one symbol should take precedent.
"Why should there be only one religious symbol?" the politician asked in a television interview.
"I'm all for removing all of them but that would be treated as an attack on the Church."
His opponents argue that with over 90 per cent of Poles declaring themselves as Catholic, and with the Catholic Church woven into the thread of Polish history and culture, the cross deserves its place on the walls.
No stranger to controversy, Mr Palikot, who once brandished a fake pistol at a press conference, quit the governing centre-right Civic Platform party last year to start his own party, declaring it too socially conservative.

Yet another victory in anti 'Polish concentration camps' campaign.
Thenews.pl 22.03.2011 11:45
The New York Times has become the latest media outlet in the US to order its journalists to refrain from using the phrase “Polish death/concentration camps” when referring to WW II German Nazi death camps in Poland.
Eileen M. Murphy, Vice President of Corporate Communications at the NYT has written to the Kosciuszko Foundation in the US – which has led the campaign against the use of what is seen in Poland as insulting and historically revisionist language – to inform them that editors have been instructed not to use the offensive terms.
“After further discussions of the concerns raised by you and others, Times editors have decided to add an entry to the newsroom's stylebook specifically cautioning journalists to avoid misleading phrases like "Polish concentration camp," Eileen M. Murphy writes in a letter to Kosciuszko Foundation president Alex Storozynski.
The misuse of language by NYT journalists reached obsurd proportions last week when the New York Times has mistakenly placed the Dachau Nazi concentration camp in Poland (it was actually in Germany).
In last Sunday’s edition of the New York Times Magazine, an article entitled “Yasir Qadhi: An American Cleric” included a photograph which was erroneously labelled as “Qadhi and other American Muslim clerics pray at the Dachau concentration camp in Poland last August.”
The letter from the NYT to the Kosciuszko Foundation continues: “As we have already pointed out, editors immediately took steps to correct the erroneous references to Dachau in an online caption over the weekend. We also published a correction about the phrase "Polish concentration camp" in an obituary last fall. We understand the great sensitivity of this topic and regret that any such lapses have occurred,” the letter continues.
“But we would like to reiterate that such instances, however unfortunate, are simply mistakes, and it is wrong to suggest that they reflect any malice or deliberate distortion.”
“Still, to demonstrate our shared concern over this issue, we will add a note on this point to the stylebook and take extra care to try to avoid any further errors,” concludes the NYT letter.
Petition
Last year the Kosciuszko Foundation launched an online petition to force media outlets to refrain from using “Polish camps” in articles about camps in Nazi occupied Poland during WW II. The petition has been signed by President Bronislaw Komorowski, former president Lech Walesa, Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski and many other prominent Poles in the US and elsewhere.
In November the Wall Street Journal finally relented and ordered journalists to refer to Auschwitz and Treblinka as ‘Nazi death camps’ and not ‘Polish camps’.
The Wall Street Journal’s Style and Substance editor, Paul R. Martin made an official entry into the Wall Street Journal Essential Guide to Business Style and Usage, sazingŁ"Concentrate on this: There were no Polish concentration camps in World War II. Auschwitz and other such camps in Polish territory were operated by German Nazis." (pg)

Nationalists burn effigy of Jan T Gross.
Thenews.pl 22.03.2011 12:11
The far-right All-Polish Youth group burnt and drowned an effigy of controversial sociologist historian Jan Tomasz Gross yesterday, following the publication last week of Golden Harvest, (Zlote Zniwa) which recounts how some Poles gained financially from the flight of Jews during and after the German Nazi occupation of Poland.
About thirty members of the All-Polish Youth - an organization which declares that its aim is to raise Polish youth in a Catholic and patriotic spirit and was formerly the youth wing of the League of Polish Families - gathered yesterday in the western city of Wroclaw to protest against what they say is the fabrication of history by Jan Tomasz Gross.
Gross’s previous publications, including Neighbours (2001) and Fear (2006) also raised controversy, with critics claiming that the author slanders Polish history.
According to the Slavic tradition, an effigy of Marzanna, the Slavic goddess associated with death and winter, made of straw and rags, is set on fire on the first day of Spring and drowned in a river on the first day of spring to celebrate the end of winter.
All Polish Youth observed the custom yesterday in their own particular in a particular way – by burning and drowning a figure of Jan Tomasz Gross.
“Gross tells lies about Poles. It’s not true that Poles contributed to the Holocaust,” Robert Winnicki, leader of the All-Polish Youth in Wroclaw told the Gazeta Wyborcza daily.
In the previous years, members of the organisation burnt and drowned a figure of Erica Steinbach, president of the German Federation of Expellees with bad reputation in Poland, to protest against her perception of Germans being victims of Poles who expelled them from their motherland. (mg/pg)

Anti-Semitism at Polish Latin American Congress. Gazeta Wyborcza, TVN24 29.03.2011 12:42 Jan Kobylanski; photo - TVP Anti-Semitic remarks have cast a shadow over the Congress of the Union of Polish Associations and Organizations in Latin America (USOPAL), organized by far-right businessman Jan Kobylanski. “There isn’t even 30 percent of genuine Poles in the Polish government. I hope this will change,” Jan Kobylanski told the ultra-conservative Radio Maryja. “The world’s government has decided that there should be only 15 million Poles, healthy Jewish farm-hands,” Kazimierz Switon, former communist opposition member known for anti-Semitic views, said at the Congress. In his speech Switon also referred to the late president Lech Kaczynski who died in the air crash in Smolensk last April. “Those who fight against a cross will die under the cross. The President who signed the EU Lisbon Treaty, which deprived our homeland of its sovereignty, died. Divine providence watches over Poland and severely punishes those who destroy our chosen Catholic nation,” said Switon, adding that the incumbent president Bronislaw Komorowski has decided to follow in Kaczynski’s footsteps. “We’ve a genuine Judeo-Polonia. Poland for Poles. A minority group cannot rule our country,” said Tadeusz Wasiak, who Kobylanski wants to be Poland’s president. Five Polish MPs, members of the opposition Law and Justice party, a nuncio in Uruguay and several bishops participated in the congress but no one responded to the anti-Semitic statements, it is being reported. Jan Kobylanski is a Polish millionaire residing in Uruguay. He is a founder of the Union of Polish Associations and Organizations in Latin America (USOPAL), the largest immigrant organization in Latin America, and a former honorary consul of Poland to Paraguay and Argentina, removed from the post by the former Foreign Minister Wladyslaw Bartoszewski. Kobylanski is a long time sponsor of a Catholic radio station Radio Maryja. Kobylanski is known for his anti-Semitism and the state historical body, the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) alleges that during WW II the Polish businessman denounced Jews to Nazis. (mg/pg)

Poles most attractive in Europe, say Poles.
Thenews.pl 31.03.2011 11:06
Poles think they are most attractive in Europe and hold their drink better than other nations, finds a survey conducted by the UK’s Guardian newspaper.
Fifty seven percent of Poles told opinion pollsters ICM that they thought they were the most attractive in Europe, compared to 41 percent of Spaniards. Only one-in-five Brits think they are the continent’s most alluring.
In fact, Poles have quite a high opinion of themselves in general.
Sixty one percent think they can hold their drink better than other Europeans, compared to 15 percent of Brits and 14 percent of Spaniards.
Seventy percent of Poles think they have the best cuisine in Europe, just 10 percent less than the French, who, of course, have a rather high opinion of their own cooking.
The poll was taken from a sample of 5,000 in five different countries – Poland, Spain, France, Germany and UK.
Only 17 percent of Poles think they are the best drivers in Europe, however. (pg)

Wow thats low blow man. When did that happen? "Czechs usually see everything negatively, and when anything happens, they make a mess in their pants.” Czech Prime minister for ODS, Miroslav Topolanek Says the biggest mafian politician of all. He would rather continue stealing money with his socialist friends then fixing the problems we face. Also, if I am right, we warned Poland that they'll be next and they refused the claim (bad idea). Then they have shitted their pants when Germany swiftly TO'ed them. Kinda fits for Poland.

hahaha pathetic ...a pathetic and coward nation ;D "The comparison with the Poles is a bit misleading. We should compare with other nations that the Poles, who are exceptional in their bravery, their courage and their opposition towards the oppressors of all kinds in the history. The Czechs should compare themselves with other nations, such as the Danes or the Dutch, with the small nations, which were occupied by the German army, which were not pleased with the occupation but which had to survive the occupation. And that was the basic problem for the majority of the Czech people, just to survive the occupation, just to live through the war." Heroes or cowards? Czechs in World War II www.radio.cz/en/section/special/heroes-or-cowards-czechs-in-world-war-iihahahaha a Czech saying hahaha...During most of its history, Czechia was enslaved by the nearby Germany Czechs eternal german suckers! Do you remember?

Nah, I am not going to quit now. "Nejhorší srážka v životě, je srážka s blbcem. Blbce nikdy neusvědčíte z blbství. Z takové srážky vyjdete vždy jako nevětší blbec pod sluncem." Jan Werich Too bad czech republic didn't exist until 1993. And germany didn't exist until William I, German Emperor who united german nation states. I don't see the humor in being left by French to die. Oh yes, you would rather kill millions just to save honor, but for who if everyone dies and noone will remember you. Pity for Serbians not to understand this... Insulting art piece... you just declared yourself fucktard congratulations. Czechia what? Gosh...
