Moldova turns down Kiev’s suggestions on Transnistria.
RT.com 27 Apr, 2022 21:31
Moldova has turned down the “offer” to capture its breakaway region of Transnistria by force floated by Kiev, stating that it seeks to reintegrate the self-proclaimed republic only through political means.
“The settlement of the Transnistrian issue can be achieved by political means and only on the basis of a peaceful solution, excluding military and other forcible actions, as well as on the basis of the principles of democratization and demilitarization of the region, [and] respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova,” the country’s office for reintegration told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
The statement came in response to remarks made by Alexey Arestovich, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The official suggested the country was capable of “capturing” Transnistria should Chisinau formally request Kiev’s help in conquering the breakaway region.
“Yes, [we] would have managed somehow, but this is the territory of sovereign Moldova, [it could happen] only after the appeal of the Moldovan side,” he said.
Arestovich’s remarks garnered condemnation in Moscow as well, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov describing such statements as “quite provocative.”
The international attention towards Transnistria comes as the breakaway nation endured a string of mysterious incidents over the past few days. On Monday, Transnistria’s Ministry of State Security was attacked by three unknown assailants, who fired shoulder-mounted rocket launchers at the building, blowing out its windows and damaging its façade.
The attack was followed back-to-back by explosions at a local broadcasting center on Tuesday morning. While no one was hurt, the facility had its biggest antennas – which transmitted Russian radio stations – destroyed.
The president of the self-proclaimed republic of Transnistria, Vadim Krasnoselsky, blamed the incidents he described as “terror attacks” on Ukrainian nationals and urged Kiev to investigate the armed groups that had allegedly infiltrated his region.

Terror attack foiled near Ukrainian border – Transnistria.

A weaponized cargo drone was intercepted overnight near a large telecom center located in the village of Mayak, the Interior Ministry of the self-proclaimed republic of Transnistria said on Tuesday.
The intercepted drone appeared to be a home-made contraption, jury-rigged from different parts, the ministry said.
“The drone with a diameter of one and a half meters was assembled from various components. The equipment was so powerful it could move loads of up to 20 kilograms to a distance of some 30 kilometers from the operator who controlled it,” it added.
The drone carried a canister containing “unknown brown liquid” and a small barrel containing two kilograms of plastic explosives with radio detonators attached. Imagery released by the Transnistrian authorities suggest the drone was also fitted with a payload release system to drop its deadly cargo.
According to the Interior Ministry’s information, the drone’s operators were seeking to use the device to attack a transformer cooling station of the telecom center. If successful, the attack would have knocked out the whole facility at once, the ministry noted, adding that the weaponized drone came into the region “from the Ukrainian side.”
The aircraft was “neutralized” by the border guards deployed to patrol the crucial facility after it was attacked by unknown assailants late in April. Back then, two large radio masts transmitting Russian radio stations were blown up in the center.
In recent days, Transnistria has endured a string of mysterious incidents involving the region’s critical civilian and military infrastructure. Apart from the attacks on the Mayak broadcasting center, Transnistria’s Ministry of State Security was targeted by three unknown assailants, who fired shoulder-mounted rocket launchers at the building, shattering its windows and damaging its façade. Several explosions also occurred at a military compound outside Transnistria’s capital city of Tiraspol.
The president of the self-proclaimed republic, Vadim Krasnoselsky, blamed the incidents he described as “terror attacks” on Ukrainian nationals, urging Kiev to probe the armed groups that had allegedly infiltrated his region.

Transnistria reports explosions near Ukrainian border.

The breakaway Moldovan region of Transnistria has reported new attacks from drones near its border with Ukraine following a string of mysterious incidents described by the self-proclaimed republic as acts of “terror.”
According to the Transnistrian Interior Ministry, on Friday evening four explosions occurred in the vicinity of a former airfield near the village of Voronkovo, 10 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. First, two bombs were dropped from the air at 9.40 pm local time and two more – an hour later, the ministry claimed, adding that no injuries have been reported.
“The depth of the craters is approximately 1 meter, the diameter is about 25 centimeters. An investigative team is at the scene,” the ministry said in a statement, adding that bomb fragments have been collected for analysis.
The ministry said the alleged drone strikes mark the second case of suspicious activity in the Voronkovo area. The first occurred on May 5 when “two explosive devices were dropped from a drone.”
The incidents follow the interception of a weaponized cargo drone near a radio mast in the village of Mayak on May 3. The drone carried a canister with an “unknown brown liquid” and a small barrel containing two kilograms of plastic explosives with radio detonators attached. According to the Interior Ministry, the drone's operators were seeking to use the device to attack the radio tower’s transformer cooling station. If successful, the attack would have knocked out the whole facility at once, the ministry noted, adding that the weaponized drone came into the region “from the Ukrainian side.”
Prior to that, Transnistria reported several incidents involving critical civilian and military infrastructure. Aside from the attacks on the Mayak radio broadcast facility, the region's Ministry of State Security was targeted by three unknown assailants, who fired at the building using shoulder-mounted rocket launchers. Several explosions also occurred at a military compound outside Transnistria's capital, Tiraspol.
The president of the self-proclaimed republic, Vadim Krasnoselsky, accused Ukrainian nationals of what he described as “terror attacks” and urged Kiev to probe the armed groups that have allegedly infiltrated his region. On Friday, Krasnoselsky said that the red terror threat level might be extended beyond May 10, depending on how the situation unfolds.

Firebomb attacks reported near Ukraine's Western border.

Law enforcement in a breakaway region of Moldova reported two separate attacks on its capital on Friday. Transnistria’s interior ministry said Molotov cocktails were thrown at an oil depot and a conscription center, but did not cause any significant damage.
The incidents happened 30 minutes apart in the middle of the night, the ministry claimed. In one of them, an individual threw a firebomb at an oil storage facility in Tiraspol before driving away at high speed.
In the second episode, an unidentified man flung two incendiary projectiles at a building on a military site. In both cases, security quickly extinguished the flames, the report outlined.
Transnistria has been hit by a string of apparent acts of attempted sabotage involving drone-delivered explosives since the launch of Russia’s military operation against Ukraine in February. These have targeted key civilian and military infrastructure. The Moscow-aligned leadership of the entity has declared a state of emergency due to what it describes as a terrorist threat.
Transnistria, which borders Ukraine’s western Odessa region, proclaimed its independence from Moldova in 1990 after Chisinau split from the Soviet Union. Two years later, tensions between Moldova and Transnistria escalated into a five-months-long armed conflict.
Transnistria hosts a contingent of Russian peacekeepers and seeks closer ties with Moscow, going so far as using the Russian national flag as a state symbol on par with its own flag. Ukrainian military officials have repeatedly claimed that one of Russia’s primary military goals in Ukraine was to secure a route to the landlocked Moldavian region. As the drone attacks continued, Tiraspol said it had no intention of getting involved in the hostilities in Ukraine.
