The League of East European States (German: osteuropäischer Staatenbund), - was a political idea conceived during World War I for the establishment of a buffer state (Pufferstaat) within the Jewish Pale of Settlement of Russia, composed of the former Polish provinces annexed by Russia, which would be a de facto protectorate of the German Empire in Mitteleuropa. The main purpose of this proposal was to make impossible any revival of an independent Poland.[1]

In 1902, prominent Zionist Max Bodenheimer wrote a memorandum to the German Foreign Ministry in which he claimed that Yiddish, the common language of East European Jewry who lived in the provinces annexed from Poland by Russia and Austria, was "a popular German dialect", and that these Jews were mentally well disposed to Germany by linguistic affinity and hence could be an instrument of German imperial policy in the East. In August 1914, a German Committee for Freeing of Russian Jews (Deutsches Komitee zur Befreiung der Russischen Juden) was founded by German Zionists, including Bodenheimer, Franz Oppenheimer and Adolf Friedmann, and Russian Zionist Leo Motzkin.

According to this plan, the new state should be a monarchy ruled by the Hohenzollern dynasty.

The population of some 30 million of this state would be composed of of 6 million Jews, 8 million Poles, 11 million Ukrainians and Belarusians, 3.5 million Lithuanians and Latvians, and under 0.5 million Baltic Germans. Isaiah Friedman in the book Germany, Turkey, and Zionism 1897-1918 on page 231 gives the following number of nationalities: Poles, 8 million; Ukrainians, 5 million; Belarusians, 4 million; Lithuanians, Estonians, and Latvians, 3 to 5 million; Jews, 6 million; and Germans, 1.8 million. While in theory all the groups were to enjoy national autonomy, the Poles were to be "counterbalanced" and Jews and Germans were to "tip the scales" in the proposed state. Isaiah Friedman notes that such a collection of nationalities had merits for German war aims, as it would be dependent on Germany, while a separate Polish state spelled danger.

This concept was criticized by various Zionist leaders as impractical and dangerous, and eventually was given up after Wilhelm II of Germany and Franz Joseph of Austria issued the Act of November 5th 1916 in which they proclaimed the creation of the Kingdom of Poland.

(AP) In New York, where one of every eight voters is Jewish, it certainly won't hurt that First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton can note the Jewish branch on her family tree.

Mrs. Clinton, who is Methodist, "has very fond childhood memories" of the second husband of her grandmother, Max Rosenberg, a Russian-born Jew, said Howard Wolfson, a spokesman for the first lady's Senate exploratory committee.

Wolfson said Thursday that he doesn't "expect it will have an electoral impact, and we don't see it in that context."

Mrs. Clinton's maternal grandmother, Della, married Rosenberg in 1933, seven years after she and Mrs. Clinton's grandfather, Edwin Howell, divorced, according to a weekly Jewish newspaper, The Forward.

They had filed a petition for Max to adopt Della's children, including Mrs. Clinton's mother, Dorothy, but the attempt failed. Max Rosenberg died in Los Angeles in 1984.

Mrs. Clinton angered potential Jewish voters last year by voicing support for a Palestinian state, but has recently told Jewish leaders she considers Jerusalem "the eternal and indivisible capital" of Israel.

She has also said she favors moving the U.S. Embassy for Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The United States has never recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Neo-Nazi ringleader pleads guilty to assault, gets jailtime

The leader of a neo-Nazi gang from Petah Tikva was convicted yesterday in a plea bargain under which his sentence will range from four to seven and a half years in prison.

Arik Buniatov, 20, was convicted on several counts of aggravated assault for racist motives, ordinary assault, battery, threats, incitement to racism, conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of racist material. Another member of the gang, a minor, was also convicted under the plea bargain; he will be sentenced to a prison term of up to two and half years. Advertisement


Altogether, eight members of Buniatov's gang were indicted for having attacked foreign workers, homeless people and Orthodox Jews while shouting neo-Nazi slogans. The gang also documented their attacks on video.

In one incident, for instance, the gang attacked a drug addict near Tel Aviv's Carmel Market and forced him to go down on his knees and beg pardon for being a Jew. They then posted a video of the incident on YouTube and the neo-Nazi Web site Format 18.

After the verdict was read out in the Tel Aviv District Court, Buniatov's lawyer, Shimshon Weiss, told reporters: "He is very sorry for what happened."

Weiss argued that Buniatov had had a difficult life, having immigrated to Israel at age 9 and later dropped out of school. "He was an alien plant in Israel," Weiss said. "He was searching for an identity, and it was easy for him to connect to an ideology that empowered him - a difficult and disgraceful ideology that none of us can identify with."

Buniatov was considered the leader of the gang, and the one who urged the others to adopt a neo-Nazi ideology and engage in violence.

The indictment detailed e-mails in which he boasted to other gang members of having carried out an aktion against Arabs (aktion is the word used by the Nazis for anti-Jewish pogroms); of holding a ceremony on Hitler's birthday in which he swore allegiance to the Nazi leader; and of his success in obtaining a Russian translation of Hitler's book Mein Kampf. In one e-mail, he said, "The Fuehrer was right about the Jews, but they finished him off."

Four other members of the gang were convicted in a separate plea bargain about a month ago; that deal called for them to receive sentences ranging from 15 months to four and a half years. The remaining two defendants are currently in advanced negotiations to conclude their own plea bargains with the prosecution.
