... Vid, rt.com/news/244753-russia-akinfeev-montenegro-flare/Russia-Montenegro Euro qualifier abandoned after 2 players hit by objects thrown by fans. RT.com March 27, 2015 20:18 Russia’s Euro 2016 qualifying match against Montenegro was abandoned after two Russian players were hit by objects thrown from the crowd. Goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev was hit by a flare, while Dmitry Kombarov was struck by a cigarette lighter. What should have been a crucial European qualifier for both sides in Podgorica got off to the worst possible start. The match had just kicked off, but with a minute gone, Russia goalkeeper Akinfeev was struck by a flare thrown from the second tier of the stand behind the goal, where the Montenegro fans were sitting. The 28 year-old immediately fell to the ground and was carried off on a stretcher, before being taken to hospital. The Montenegran fan who threw the flare was identified by CCTV and detained, according to a stadium employee. Eduard Bezuglov, the doctor attending the Russian team, said the goalkeeper suffered a concussion and burn to his neck. "Akinfeev has a head concussion and a burned neck after he was hit by a flare," Bezuglov was quoted as saying by the Russian Football Union website. "He underwent observation in a local clinic. He had a brain scan as well as a number of other tests. His life is not in danger.” German referee Deniz Aytekin immediately stopped the match and ordered both teams to leave the pitch and go to their dressing rooms. A delay of around 35 minutes ensued, as the UEFA match delegate consulted with UEFA President Michel Platini on whether the match should continue, a source from the organization told Tass news agency. Russia coach Fabio Capello was against his team returning to the pitch. However, following a long delay both teams returned to the pitch and resumed play, with Zenit St. Petersburg’s Yury Lodygin replacing the unfortunate Akinfeev. An announcement from the director of the stadium warned supporters that any further trouble would lead to the game being abandoned. However, midway through the second half, trouble flared again. A Russian midfielder had just seen his penalty saved and as Dmitry Kombarov ran to take the resulting throw-in, he was hit by a cigarette lighter, according to teammate Vasily Berezutsky. "I think a lighter hit Dmitry Kombarov. Therefore the referee led the players off the pitch and to the dressing rooms,” Berezutsky told the Russia-2 television channel after the match. The match was subsequently abandoned by the UEFA delegate and Russia are likely to be awarded an automatic 3-0 victory, once European football’s governing body has carried out an investigation. The president of the Russian Football Union, Nikolay Tolstykh, said the game should have been halted following the Akinfeev incident. "Following the end of the match, the Russian Football Union lodged a protest,” Tolstykh told Sport-Express newspaper. “In our view the game should have been stopped in the first minute. The protest has been made. Today we will let UEFA know of our position.” He added: "During the timeframe that they have, UEFA will look at our protest and I am sure they will come up with an objective and fair decision, according to the regulations.” Had Capello not taken his team back out onto the pitch, then Russia would have lost the game 3-0 automatically and would not have been able to qualify from their group. UEFA said it would wait to receive reports from the match delegate and referee before opening disciplinary proceedings but Russian coach Fabio Capello also said the match should have been stopped after the Akinfeev incident. "In my opinion, they needed to stop the game immediately," Capello told a press conference. "We did what the match delegate told us and went out on to the pitch and played. We could not simply refuse and walk away." Austria are currently top of Group G with 13 points from five games, while Russia are in third place with 5 points from four matches played. The top two teams at the end of the qualifying campaign will go forward to the Euro 2016 championships in France.

Rama apologizes to Serbs over stoning of bus. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama apologized for the incident in which a bus transporting Serbian football team was stoned. TANJUG THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2015 | 13:54 Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama conferred on Thursday with Serbian Minister of Education Srdjan Verbic and a group of students from Serbia and apologized for the incident in which a bus transporting Serbian football team was stoned. You are aware that even neighbors go at each other during football matches, and though it is important for Albania to win, or Serbia to score a victory as the minister (Verbic) may put it, the most important matter is for proper conduct to triumph as a quality we represent together, Rama said. The Albanian prime minister voiced regret over the fact that, as he said, a young man aged 14 or 15 threw a stone at a bus transporting the Serbian football team late on Wednesday. Rama said that this is a proof that a lot of work still remains to be done since the older generation nurtures hatred against changes and is brining the dreams of the new world into jeopardy over nationalism and the spirit of hatred. Rama conferred with Serbian students in the building of the Albanian government and expressed gratitude to them for the gifts they brought him. Before the meeting, the official welcome ceremony for Minister Verbic and Serbian students was organized by Albanian Minister of Education Lindita Nikolla and 60 Albanian students whose families will provide accommodation for the guests. ---------------- Vucic: No tolerance for ambassador’s undiplomatic move. Aleksandar Vucic stated on Thursday that the Albanian ambassador in Belgrade, has acted in an undiplomatic manner. TANJUG THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2015 | 18:04 Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic stated on Thursday that the Albanian ambassador in Belgrade, who refused to collect the protest note of the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs over the stoning of the bus transporting the Serbian football team in Tirana, has acted in an undiplomatic manner and will therefore be denied contact with Serbian officials in the next six months. Addressing a news conference following the meeting with Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of Great Britain Philip Hammond, Vucic said that ambassadors have the right to react in such a manner and that Serbia can declare them as persona non grata or deny them contact with Serbian representatives for the duration of six months in such instances. My decision is for us to try and not spoil the relations in this way, which is why he (Albanian ambassador) will not be able to reach me or other government officials over the next six months, Vucic said and added that such behavior cannot be tolerated. Vucic said that he talked to Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, and that the two countries would continue their cooperation. ---------------- Albania: Tensions high at Albania-Serbia Euro 2016 qualifier. RT.com 11 Jun, 2016 20:55 Russian national football team have scored in stoppage time to snatch a 1-1 draw against favorites England in their starting Group B match at Euro 2016 in Marseille, France. Euro 2016 football championship in France LIVE UPDATES The young and speedy English team was quick to take control of the ball and dominated possession until the end of the first half. Wayne Rooney and his teammates created several challenges, but none of them posed an unsolvable task for experienced Russian goalkeeper, Igor Akinfeev. Team Russia managed to score one shot on target before the break, with defender Sergey Ignashevich testing English goalie, Joe Hart, with a header. The Russian side stepped up its game in the second half and created a few good chances. But England was still more dangerous and eventually pulled ahead in the 73rd minute of play at Velodrome stadium. Defensive midfielder, Eric Dier, landed a free-kick to leave Akinfeev no chance, putting England one up on the goals. The Englishmen seemed to be headed for the win, but the Russians kept seeking an equalizer until the final whistle. The team found one in the 92nd minute, with substitute Aleksandr Glushkov scoring into an empty net after captain Vasily Berezutsky won a midair battle for the ball in the English box, leaving the score 1-1. There was violence in Marseille ahead of the match as at least 10 people as English and Russian fans clashed with each other and the police. In another Group B encounter of the day, European rookies Wales cruised to a 2-1 win against Slovakia. RT.com 11 Jun, 2016 21:01 Following Russia’s 1-1 draw with England, Russian fans broke into the English zone at Marseille’s Stade Velodrome, sparking a fist fight. The violence then poured onto the streets of the French city, which is witnessing a third day of chaotic clashes. Russia equalized less than two minutes before the final whistle, at which point a group of Russian supporters overpowered the stewards separating the two sets of fans. Video from the stadium shows English spectators scattering from their sector, as they are being chased by groups of Russians. The violence on the stands was suppressed when additional stewards intervened to separate the rival groups. However, after the fans left the venue and poured into streets, sporadic clashes continued throughout the city. Hooligans were burning flares and throwing chairs and bottles as they raged in the streets of Marseille. The number of people injured in Marseille clashes over the past three days has risen to 35, according to French daily La Provence. Most of them suffered minor injuries and have been discharged from hospitals, but at least four people remain in a “critical” condition. The head of the Russian football fans’ union told TASS that no mass clashes between the Russian and English fans in the stands had taken place. “In fact, there was no clash,” said Aleksandr Shprigin. “The entire English sector… just got up and ran away. There were no scuffles, police were standing there. Everything is ok. The police are working well.” The Russian Football Union will identify and punish the Russian fans who behaved inappropriately during the match, Russian Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko told R-Sport. Mutko blamed improper organization and “weak” security measures at the match for the brief scuffles, which he said are being exaggerated. “There was no clash… that’s being exaggerated, in fact everything is fine here. When the match ended, there was no barrier between the fans. The British were upset, of course, but it all quickly dissolved,” the minister said. “Such matches should be organized properly. It is necessary to separate the fans [at the stadium]. The bad thing is that there were firecrackers and flares. There were no nets. One must understand these things.” The UEFA Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body (CEDB) will review the conduct of Russian fans at the stadium on Sunday, an association representative told TASS. Earlier the same day police used tear gas and water cannons to separate the Russians, English and combative locals as they brawled in the Old Port, the historic center of Marseille. An England fan has CPR performed on him by riot police after he suffers head injuries caused by Russian fans on the third day of violence in Marseille - he is in a critical condition English fans carry a friend to safety after he is injured, and his clothes are ripped off, during a clash with Russian fans in the Old Port England fans are covered in blood after suffering head injuries from clashes with rival fans on the streets of Marseille this evening An English fan is detained by French security personnel in Marseille as the square was left resembling a war zone An English fan was knocked unconscious following the attack on the supporters by Russian football hooligans A bloodied Russian fan is detained by police after supporters clashed with Russian hooligans in Marseille this evening Look at all these little girls trying to believe they are brave, they ran so fast when russians chased them off! www.rt.com/sport/346256-nice-euro2016-football-clashes/Euro 2016 chaos spreads to Nice ahead of Poland-Northern Ireland match (VIDEO) RT.com 12 Jun, 2016 00:32 Clashes between football fans have broken out in the southern French city of Nice, ahead of the Poland vs. Northern Ireland match on Sunday. Bottles and chairs were thrown at riot police in a chaotic confrontation resembling the ongoing violence in Marseille. Footage circulating online shows fans wearing dark green Northern Ireland jerseys fighting several men on the streets of Nice. Police are seen responding at the scene to stop the scuffles, which reportedly took place around 11:30pm local time. According to reports, the clashes happened in the Vieux Nice area in a street in Saint-François-de-Paule as football fans were watching England playing Russia in neighboring Marseille. The scuffles apparently started when a bottle was thrown at a Northern Ireland fan, allegedly by a group of local Frenchmen, and the crowd responded to the provocation. Bottles were thrown, tables were overturned and windows smashed before police responded to the disturbance. “About 20 to 30 Nice youths started throwing bottles at the Northern Ireland fans. Some bottles were thrown back, some punches were thrown,” Northern Ireland police officer who was at the scene of the attack told AFP. At least seven people were injured in the clashes, with local media reporting the tussle as an isolated incident. Nice Mayor Christian Estrosi condemned the fighting via Twitter, saying “the behavior of these hooligans is unacceptable and must be severely punished.” The mayor said that one person was arrested in Nice's old town while “the situation is calmer now.” The fighting in Nice followed a day of intense clashes in Marseille, where Russia and England match ended with a 1-1 draw.

There is talk of a golden generation in Croatian football, led by established stars like Luka Modric – the match-winner here, and it has been suggested that 2016 could be the year that these also-rans, quarter-finalists in 1996 and 2008, could even win the thing. They like France too, having come third at the World Cup here in 1998, when Davor Suker was the tournament's top scorer, and they showed glimpses of their undoubted potential back in the French capital. Poland 1-0 Northern Ireland: Arkadiusz Milik's second-half strike condemns Michael O'Neill's side to defeat in Group C opener. By OLIVER HOLT FOR MAILONLINE 17:49 GMT, 12 June 2016 In the searing heat of the Cote d'Azur, Northern Ireland ran themselves into the ground in a desperate attempt to avoid defeat at their first appearance at a major finals for 30 years. They chased and they harried and they blocked and they tackled in their efforts to keep a fine Poland side at bay. They came close but they could not quite manage it. They achieved one of their main aims of quietening the qualifying tournament's top scorer, Robert Lewandowski, but it was not enough. Five minutes after half-time, Lewandowski's strike partner, Arkadiusz Milik, broke their resistance with a neat finish and despite the fanatical backing of their travelling fans, who matched the Poles for the volume of their support, Michael O'Neill's side could not find a way back into the game. They did fashion one late, rare chance when captain Steven Davis ran on to a clever free-kick but with the goal beckoning, he misjudged the pace of the ball and missed his kick. It was a measure of Northern Ireland's durability that the Poles greeted the final whistle with some relief. ---------------- France: Chairs fly as fans face-off in Lille. Ruptly TV Jun 14, 2016 Riot police intercepted rival football fans who were provoking each other in central Lille, Tuesday. The fans threw chairs and bottles and had minor scuffles before police arrived to separate the two groups. The incident occurred outside a bar next to the Gare de Lille train station. ---------------- Why Russian Football Fans Became Focus of Western Media Attention. Sputnik POLITICS 21:28 14.06.2016 In recent years sport has become politicized, thus, unsurprisingly, Euro 2016 has suddenly turned into a political battlefield with Russia as the major "culprit." Following violent clashes between English and Russian football fans in Marseille, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has fined the Russian football federation 150,000 euros ($170,000). Furthermore, Russia has been given 'suspended disqualification' from Euro 2016. "France wants to deport almost 50 Russian soccer fans, Alexander Shprygin, the head of a Russian supporters' group, said on Tuesday, adding that French riot police had stopped a bus carrying fans in Cannes who were on their way to Lille," Reuters wrote Tuesday. But how did it all begin? According to independent journalist and geopolitical analyst Martin Berger, it is well documented that even before the beginning of Euro 2016 English fans were asking for trouble. Besides the fact that they were spotted fighting Marseille's "ultras" they went even so far as to mock representatives of the local Muslim community, the journalist notes, citing the Daily Mail. It should be noted that Muslims make up around a third of Marseille's population. "The aggressive actions of British hooligans before Euro 2016 were described in much detail by both The Guardian and The Independent. It's been reported that they were chanting 'ISIS [Daesh], where are you?', singing insulting songs, and destroying the private property of local residents. They even assaulted a bus that was painted in the colors of the Russian flag," Berger narrates in his article for New Eastern Outlook. Later, on Friday clashes erupted between Russian and English football fans. At the end of the match between Russia and England clashes were registered again. However, it was not the only disturbing episode of Euro 2016: on Sunday conflicts erupted between French "ultras" and football fans from Poland and Northern Ireland in Nice, according to local officials. But that is not all, on Monday Deutsche Welle reported a violent skirmish between German and Ukrainian fans in the French city of Lille which took place on June 12. "In the latest incidents of violence in Lille, around 50 German hooligans attacked Ukrainian fans ahead of their group stage encounter on Sunday," the media outlet narrated. According to Berger, "the sport has increasingly become subjected to political meddling." Furthermore, the sport has become part of a Western anti-Russian media campaign. A series of materials aimed at defaming Russian athletics were recently released by Western media including a documentary on doping in Russia by German broadcaster ARD. "In this case, we still consider it unproven slander. We are still convinced that doping must be fought. This fight is constantly carried out in our country, including in line with the Russian president's instructions," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on June 9, commenting on ARD's documentary. One of the reasons behind the doping scandal could be Russia's hosting of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko told reporters in early June. "Today, the Cold War is over but political meddling in sports refuses to become part of history. Instead, an ever-increasing number of sporting events are being subjected to political pressure," Berger stresses.

Moscow Summons French Envoy Over Russian Fans' Detention During Euro-2016. Sputnik RUSSIA 17:01 15.06.2016 The Russian Foreign Ministry has summoned the French ambassador to Moscow over the detention of Russian football fans during Euro-2016 championship in France. Moscow has notified the French envoy of discriminatory measures against some Russian fans at Euro-2016. "On June 15, French Ambassador to Moscow Jean-Maurice Ripert was summoned to the Russian Defense Ministry. He was notified of the protest in connection with yesterday's detention of a group of Russian fans who headed from Marseille to Lille for the next match of the Euro-2016 match with the Russian [football] team." Earlier on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the behavior of some Russian football fans at the Euro 2016 tournament was unacceptable, however, he also noted that there were some provocations. The Russian Foreign Ministry said that further fueling of anti-Russian sentiment over Russia's participation in the championship may aggravate relations with France. The foreign ministry noted that it "draws the attention of the French diplomat to discriminatory and nonselective nature of measures taken against Russian nationals as the Marseille prosecutor decided to detain for 48 hours all 43 people [heading to Lille on a bus], including three drivers, to conduct an investigation." On Tuesday, head of Russian Union of Fans Alexander Shprygin said French police blocked Russian football supporters in a bus on their way to the French northern city of Lille, where the Russian national team currently plays against Slovakia. On June 11, the Russian national football team met England in the UEFA Euro-2016 tournament in France. Following the match, which ended in a draw, about 30 Russian fans gained access to an area of the Marseille stadium with English fans, having broken through a security cordon.
